Challenges

The client needed insulation jackets for 5 compressor turbines but the time was a critical issue where the installation needed to be done during the scheduled shut down. The concern was oil spraying around certain sections which could damage the insulation.

 

How did KLAY EnerSol’s expertise help

KLAY EnerSol pre-empted the challenges and pre-fabricated some insulation covers based on equipment drawings. The balance covers were fabricated after site measurements were taken during shut down. To protect the insulation from oil, the areas which were prone to oil leaks and oil spray were covered with an additional layer of stainless steel foil as per ASTM guidelines. Furthermore, KLAY EnerSol ensured sufficient availability of manpower and production capacity in its fabrication facility to deliver the project as per schedule. The I-Cover is easily removable and provides ease of maintenance without the need to replace the insulation systems during each overhaul as the covers can be re-used multiple times.

The jackets were to be installed on rotating equipment with some sections prone to occasional oil spraying from surrounding equipment. The insulation works were required to be completed within the turnaround period in August 2017, the installation was completed in 13 days.

  • Removal of existing insulation of each compressor turbines.
  • Onsite measurement for fabrication drawings.
  • Fabrication of removable insulation covers.
  • Installation of the new removable I-Cover.
  • Housekeeping.

 

Results, Return on Investment and Future plans 

The project was completed two days ahead of schedule. There were no unforeseen delays despite the critical time window available to do the overall works of fabrication of the insulation material, detailed engineering designs, supplying of the materials to the plant and full installation of the five compressor turbines.

The I-Cover was successfully installed on all five compressors by eight installers. The subsequent insulation will be much faster to install because the insulation cover drawings have been established and can be pre-fabricated prior to the next shut down.
