Expansion Bellows

Fabric Expansion Joints consist of prefabricated bellows that absorb thermal expansions and vibrations – to hold parts together and to allow movements – as well as to compensate misalignments. They are mainly flexible connections in air, flue gas pipes and exhaust duct systems found in all kinds of industries.

Fabric Expansion Joints and Bellows

When selecting Fabric Expansion Joints for specific applications, the following parameters must be considered so that it can either prevent the air from coming in or going out :

  • Location of the expansion joint (hot or cold area)
  • Pressure resistance
  • Accessibility
  • Noise suppression
  • Thermal & chemical resistance
  • Movements in the ducts or other components
  • Dimensions

We provide two main types of Fabric Expansion Joints:

  • Wearflex® Q-Flex Expansion Joints
  • Wearflex® Q-Chem Expansion Joints

Features of Expansion Bellows – Wearflex®

Q-Flex Expansion Joints Q-Chem Expansion Joints
Can be made in all kinds of shapes and designs as it is very flexible Manufactured through the selection of appropriately resistant materials and heat-sealed for tightness
Joints supplied are prefabricated including the steel frames and flow plates Unique shape of the joints is obtained from the special base material used

Applications of Expansion Bellows – Wearflex®

Q-Flex Expansion Joints Q-Chem Expansion Joints
Specially designed for applications with low to moderate concentrations of aggressive components in flue gases of 250°C up to 1370°C Specially designed for applications in which resistance against wet flue gasses and high acid content is critical
Available in three standard classifications :
✔ Q-Flex LT up to 250°C (482°F)
✔ Q-Flex MT up to 500°C (932°F)
✔ Q-Flex HT up to 1370°C (2498°F)
Available in four standard classifications:
✔ Q-Chem LT up to 250°C (482°F)
✔ Q-Chem MT up to 540°C (1004°F)
✔ Q-Chem HT up to 1370°C (2498°F)
✔ Q-Chem GTX up to 650°C (1202°F) (specially developed for gas turbine outlets)

Comparison between Expansion Bellows – Wearflex® and Conventional Method

Expansion Bellows – Wearflex® Conventional Method
Very flexible – able to handle bellows that expand and contract Not flexible – can tear in the long run as bellows expand and contract
Can handle aggressive components Might not be able to handle aggressive components

Design and Installation of Expansion Bellows – Wearflex®

Firstly, some details are considered such as:

  • Process temperature
  • Required cold face temperature
  • Diameter of tubes
  • Minimum and maximum movement of tubes

The data are then used to design & fabricate Expansion Bellows in our factory and shipped to our clients.

Key Benefits

  • Significant reduction of cold air ingress resulting in improved furnace efficiency.
  • Withstand temperatures of up to 1370°C.
  • Allow unrestricted movement of the tubes while maintaining complete seals.
  • Reduce the possibility of tube damage due to rapid quenching
  • Cost effective with very fast payback on investments.
  • Block radiant heat loss.
  • Personnel safety enhancement.
